Frequently asked questions about cardiologist jobs

  • What qualifications are required for a cardiologist job?

Candidates for cardiologist jobs must have a medical degree and specialist postgraduate qualification in cardiology acquired upon completion of a structured postgraduate training program.

Many regulatory authorities including Australia, Canada and New Zealand require basic training in internal medicine of at least 3 years duration prior to specialist cardiology training. Internal medicine is classed as the primary speciality and cardiology the secondary speciality (or sub speciality).

If you wish to practice in a highly specialised field such as interventional cardiology, you will need to have a fellowship or structured training in this field.

  • Are career prospects good for cardiologists?

Cardiologists are sought for full time jobs in tertiary and larger secondary hospitals and occasionally for jobs in polyclinics. Smaller secondary hospitals usually hire general physicians with an interest in cardiology to practice in a dual scope.

Some secondary hospitals are expanding their range of services and seek to hire cardiologists to asssist with the design and development of specific services such as interventional cardiology.
