FAQs About Internist / General Physician / Hospitalist Jobs

  • What are the job prospects for general physicians / internists?

General Physicians have great career and employment prospects as this is the largest medical speciality. Departments of Internal Medicine are usually the largest hospital departments with the highest number of beds and rates of bed occupancy.  Jobs are therefore widely available in most countries, particularly Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Middle East Gulf States, China, Singapore, UK and Ireland.

  • Are subspecialist qualifications in general medicine required?

General internal medicine is a very important speciality and encompasses the practice of all medical subspecialities. However there is a growing requirement in some countries for general physicians to have some training in a secondary speciality for example geriatric medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology. The rationale for this is to enhance the scope of medical services which can be provided in secondary level hospitals thereby reducing the need for tertiary referral.
