Permanent and Locum Jobs for CCFPC Eligible General Practitioners

We welcome qualified general practitioners who hold specialist qualifications approved by the College of Family Physicians of Canada to apply for permanent and locum positions across the provinces of Canada. The College of Family Physicians of Canada recognises graduates of approved residency programs in Canada and international medical graduates with residency training and qualifications from just 4 approved jurisdictions - UK, Ireland, USA and Australia.


Residency eligibility for the certification examination applies to:
  • Graduates of the College of Family Physicians of Canada- (CFPC-) accredited family medicine residency programs, who have successfully completed a minimum of 24 months of training
  • Successful graduates of postgraduate family medicine training programs in jurisdictions where the standards for accreditation of postgraduate family medicine training are judged comparable and acceptable to the CFPC


Approved jurisdictions with equivalent accreditation standards for family medicine training include:


  • United States: graduates of family medicine residency programs who have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and hold the American Board of Family Medicine.
  • Australia: graduates of Australian General Practice Vocational Training programs who have been accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and meet the standards of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and hold the FRACGP.
  • Ireland: graduates of general practice vocational training schemes who have been accredited by the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) and hold the MICGP.
  • United Kingdom: graduates of general practice vocational training programs who have been accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC) with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in general practice and who meet the standards of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) by passing the MRCGP.

  • What qualifications are required for a general practitioner job in Canada?

    Candidates for general practitioner jobs in Canda must have the following credentials:

    1. Medical degree
    2. Postgraduate qualification in general practice or family medicine listed above.
    3. MCCQE 1 pass
    4. A certificate of eligibility from the College of Family Physicians of Canada 
    5. A current unrestricted licence in jurisdiction of practice.

  • How are general practitioners paid in Canada?

    In Canada most general practitioners work on a fee for service basis and pay a percentage of total revenue to the pactice owner to cover rent, administration and maintainance costs.


    Most general practitioners can generate upwards of CAD $ 400,000 per annum and some earn more that CAD $ 1 million.


    There are some salaried jobs for general practitiones in Canada and these are often a good option for physicians who are new to working in Canada.

  • Do medical practices sponsor visas for general practitioners?

    Many medical practices and employers of general practitioners will sponsor visas for international candidates who do not hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency. Preference is always given to local candidates for jobs but where no local candidates are available, employers create a labour market report which is then used to sponsor a visa for an international physician.
