- team of 16 SMOs, 15 registrars and 15 House Officers.
- emergency department has ACEM accreditation for 24 months of training in Emergency Medicine. The department has a strong commitment to the teaching of both trainees and final year medical students from the University of Otago.
- patient mix is diverse and a majority of patients are of high acuity and frequently have late presentations.
- department receives around 100 major trauma ISS >12 presentations per year.
- active ED ultrasound and ready access to a comprehensive diagnostic radiology service, including CT, MRI, Angiography and Nuclear Medicine.
Position Overview and Responsibilities
The role includes the following:
- managing patients in the emergency department
- working shifts (day and night)
- Ward rounds and ward work
- Consultations: review of inpatients referred for opinion
- Multi-disciplinary team meetings
- Discussions and meetings with caregivers and whanau.
- Triaging and responding to referral letters
- Telephone advice and consultation
- Research and study relating to treatment of a specific patient
- Clinical advice, teaching, mentoring and support to other staff
- Junior doctor teaching
Requirements
- Fellow of the Australian College of Emergency Medicine or equivalent qualification recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centred care
